Frequently Asked Questions

Tattoo & Piercing – key questions answered clearly.

Which autoclave is suitable for a tattoo or piercing studio?
Tattoo and piercing studios need a Klasse B autoclave. The most popular are the Pro 3 L or the Pro 12 L; if you work on your own the 3 L is often enough, while for higher volumes we recommend the 12 L. The best way is to use our configurator for a suitable recommendation.
Do I really need a Klasse B autoclave in my studio?
Yes. As soon as you reprocess critical instruments that come into contact with blood or mucous membranes, a Klasse B autoclave is mandatory. For tattoo and piercing studios this is the correct and safe choice.
What does Klasse B mean for an autoclave?
Klasse B refers to full-fledged steam sterilizers with a fractionated vacuum process that also reliably sterilize wrapped, hollow and porous instruments. For instrument reprocessing in studios and medical facilities, a Klasse B device is the correct choice.
Is a UV device or a hot-air sterilizer sufficient in a studio?
No. As soon as instruments come into contact with blood or mucous membranes, a Klasse B autoclave is required; UV and hot-air devices are not sufficient for this. An ultrasonic cleaner only complements the autoclave during pre-cleaning but does not replace it.
Which items in a tattoo and piercing studio have to be sterilized?
All critical instruments that penetrate the skin or come into contact with blood – for example piercing forceps, clamps, receiving tubes, holders and reusable tools. These are sterilized wrapped in the Klasse B autoclave.
Do I have to wrap the instruments or can I sterilize them unwrapped?
Critical instruments that come into contact with blood must be sterilized wrapped. In the studio, instruments are considered critical when in doubt and should therefore be sealed; non-critical parts may also run unwrapped.
Do I need a sealing device in the studio?
In the studio, self-sealing sterilization pouches are usually sufficient – inexpensive and uncomplicated in everyday use. A sealing device is not strictly necessary, but can be useful with higher volumes.
Are the sterilization pouches standardized?
Yes, our sterilization pouches are manufactured according to DIN EN 868 and are therefore suitable for packaging critical instruments prior to steam sterilization.
How long does a sterilization cycle take?
The duration depends on the model, program and load. Reference values at full load with wrapped instruments: 3 L approx. 11–22 minutes, 12 L approx. 30–35 minutes. There is also a quick program for small quantities.
How fast is the quick program on the small 3 L device?
The Pro 3 L offers a quick program with a cycle time from approx. 7 minutes and is therefore ideal for small studios with brisk throughput.
Do I need a fixed water connection for the autoclave?
No. Our autoclaves are stand-alone devices with an integrated fresh and waste water tank and are filled manually with distilled water. A fixed water connection is optional and can also be retrofitted later.
Which water do I have to fill into the autoclave?
Use distilled or demineralized water with the lowest possible conductivity. Standard distilled water from a drugstore, supermarket or hardware store is suitable; tap water or technical battery water are not suitable.
How much space does a compact autoclave need?
The Pro 3 L is ultra-compact and fits on almost any worktop in the studio. Thanks to the integrated water tank, you only need a power socket – set it up, switch it on and get started.
From what volume is the 12 L autoclave worthwhile instead of the 3 L?
If you work on your own and have small quantities, the Pro 3 L is often enough. With more treatments, busy days or several staff members, the Pro 12 L with significantly more capacity is recommended. The configurator gives you a precise recommendation.
How many instruments fit into the autoclave per cycle?
The capacity depends on the instrument size: the 3 L has 2 trays, the 12 L 3 trays (around 18 wrapped instruments). The exact load depends on the quantity and length of your instruments.
How do I load the autoclave correctly?
Do not place the instruments too close together so that steam and air can circulate freely; ideally individually wrapped so that they do not touch. Distribute the load evenly and avoid overloading, with the paper side of the pouch facing up.
Do I also need an ultrasonic cleaner?
An ultrasonic cleaner is useful for the gentle pre-cleaning of instruments before sterilization. It complements the autoclave but does not replace it. For studios we offer suitable compact models and value bundles.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes. Installment payment is possible via Klarna or PayPal – this lets you spread the purchase conveniently over several months. Simply get in touch with us or select the option in the shop.
How do I select installment payment in the shop?
In the online shop, choose PayPal or Klarna as the payment method; the respective installment options are then shown to you directly. We do not offer financing directly through Steri24.
Why is Klarna not shown to me?
For Klarna to be shown, leave the company name and VAT number fields empty and ideally order as a guest. Installment payment via PayPal and Klarna is only possible with private accounts.
Is installment payment also possible from Austria or Switzerland?
From Austria and Switzerland, installment payment generally works via Klarna in 3 installments; PayPal installment payment is not available there. Payment by bank transfer or PayPal prepayment is also possible.
Which payment methods do you offer?
We offer PayPal, Klarna, prepayment/bank transfer, credit card, debit card, installment payment and leasing, and depending on the country also invoice. You can see all available payment methods in the shopping cart under the Payment tab.
Is leasing worthwhile or is installment payment cheaper?
Classic leasing through external providers is possible, but often comparatively expensive. We usually recommend installment payment, which is generally cheaper; we will still send you a leasing offer on request.
Is an initial validation mandatory in my studio?
As soon as you reprocess critical instruments used on people that come into contact with blood, validation is mandatory for tattoo and piercing studios. It must be carried out on site with your instruments as the load.
What does validation of an autoclave mean?
Validation is a formal test that demonstrates that your autoclave and the entire reprocessing process meet the applicable standards and sterilize reliably. It is usually carried out every 2 years on site with your instruments.
How does validation work?
An approved validator checks the autoclave and reprocessing process on site: using sensors, this includes a vacuum test, an empty-chamber profile and several sterilization runs with your instruments. You then receive a validation report.
Can I carry out the validation myself?
No. Validation must be carried out by an approved validator with special measuring equipment and cannot be performed yourself. However, according to the manual you may carry out installation and commissioning yourself.
Does the validation always have to take place on site?
Yes, validation must always be carried out on site with your instruments as the load, because it checks the actual conditions at the place of use. Sending the device to the factory for this is not possible.
Can I already use the device before the validation?
Yes. The initial validation can also be carried out after commissioning; the autoclave is ready for use immediately after delivery. It can be commissioned at any later time.
How quickly do I get a validation appointment after the purchase?
The initial validation is carried out in a separate on-site appointment; the waiting time is usually around 1–2 weeks, often faster in larger cities. You can already use the device from delivery.
At what interval must revalidation be carried out?
Revalidation is generally due every 2 years (or after reaching around 1,000 cycles) and is carried out on site. Higher cycle counts may require earlier revalidation.
Do I meet the RKI requirements with your devices?
Yes. All devices are Klasse B according to EN 13060. You document every batch in an audit-proof way via USB and thermal printer; we handle validation and maintenance on site.
How do I document reprocessing in the studio?
With USB and thermal printer you document in an RKI-compliant way – completely without complicated technology. Logs can be printed directly or saved to USB: simple, audit-proof and ideal for the inspection.
What is the batch number and what is it used for?
The batch number is a consecutive number that increases by 1 with each program run. It makes every batch traceable and is the basis of audit-proof documentation.
When do I label the wrapped instruments?
Always after sterilization. At minimum the batch number is written on the wrapped instruments, ideally with a suitable sterilization pen; tracing labels are also applied after sterilization.
How long do wrapped instruments stay usable after sterilization?
Wrapped instruments may be re-sterilized after the storage period has expired, provided the packaging is undamaged and clean – but then re-wrapped. If sterility can no longer be guaranteed, the item goes through the entire reprocessing process again.
I don't know Steri24 – why should I buy there?
Steri24 sells directly – without going through depots or intermediaries – and handles the service itself. This gives you a dense on-site service network like that of established expensive providers, but at fairer prices. Manufacturer since 1957.
How fast is on-site service if something breaks down?
We operate a dense service network in the DACH region with numerous locations and partners as well as a 24h emergency service – also on weekends. Repair and maintenance are handled by our own trained technicians or authorized partners.
What happens to my old autoclave?
We advise you on switching, take back your old device and dispose of it properly – regardless of the manufacturer. On request, the take-back takes place during the installation of the new device.
Do you also handle installation and instruction?
Yes, on request our technicians handle delivery, installation and commissioning in accordance with the legal requirements as well as the initial validation on site. Instruction is included in this.
Can I set up the autoclave myself?
Yes. According to the manual you may carry out installation and commissioning yourself – all you need is a power socket and distilled water. Instructions and a free introduction via video chat support you; on-site setup can optionally be booked.
What warranty and maintenance options are there?
As standard you receive a 2-year warranty, extendable with a maintenance contract to up to 3 years. We offer maintenance and validation at a fixed price including travel.
At what interval must the autoclave be serviced?
Maintenance is required every 24 months, but earlier as soon as around 1,000 sterilization cycles are reached. This applies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland regardless of actual use.
How long does an autoclave last in everyday studio use?
With regular maintenance, our autoclaves last many years; the compact 3 L reaches a somewhat shorter service life than the larger models due to its smaller vacuum pump. During maintenance, all critical wear parts are replaced as scheduled.
Is there a loaner device during maintenance or in case of a defect?
For a factory maintenance, the device is picked up and returned after a few working days; during this time a limited number of loaner devices is available. On-site maintenance is usually completed in one appointment.
How does a compact lifestyle device differ from the Pro models?
Both are Klasse B and RKI-compliant. The compact Pro models score with value for money, an integrated water tank and documentation via USB and thermal printer; a lifestyle device additionally focuses on very short cycles and a stylish, eye-catching design.
What should I do if the vacuum test fails?
An error during the vacuum test usually indicates that air is flowing into the chamber and that the contact pressure of the door seal needs to be increased or the seal replaced. You will find a quick guide on the inside of the door; if that does not help, contact us at steri24.de/help.
The door won't open after the program – what should I do?
A locked door can often be resolved by switching off and on again or together over the phone. Please report the problem with a description and photos via steri24.de/help, and we will assist you promptly.
Instruments are damp after sterilization – why is that?
Residual moisture can have several causes, such as loading, drying or the seal. Make sure the load is even and not overloaded; if the problem persists, fill out the form at steri24.de/help and a technician will get in touch.
Which complete package is suitable for a studio?
For studios, we bundle a Klasse B autoclave, an ultrasonic cleaner for pre-cleaning and consumables in a discounted value bundle. This gives you everything for safe reprocessing from a single source – you can find the right configuration via the configurator.
