Which autoclave is suitable for a podiatry practice?
For podiatry practices, the Klasse B Pro 3 L (compact, fast) is usually the most popular; for larger practices with many treatments, the 12 L is the better choice. Which autoclave is suitable for foot care, cosmetic or nail studios?
For foot care and cosmetic studios, the Klasse B Pro 3 L (small, fast, compact) is usually the most popular choice; from around eight treatments per day or with several staff members, we recommend the Pro 12 L with four times the volume. It is best to fill in our configurator, then we will find the right device for you.
Do I even need an autoclave in podiatry?
As soon as you reprocess critical instruments that come into contact with blood or injured skin, a Klasse B autoclave is mandatory. In podiatry, this applies to typical instruments such as scalpels, forceps or burs. A standalone ultrasonic cleaner or a disinfection bath does not replace sterilisation.
What does Klasse B mean for an autoclave?
Klasse B refers to fully featured steam sterilisers with a fractionated vacuum process that can also sterilise wrapped, hollow and porous instruments. For instrument reprocessing in medical and podiatry facilities, a Klasse B device is required in Germany.
What is the difference between Klasse B, A and N?
Klasse B offers full sterilisation with a vacuum process for wrapped, unwrapped, hollow and porous instruments. Klasse N may only sterilise unwrapped, solid instruments and is not sufficient for reprocessing critical instruments used on humans; Klasse A is not a European standard. For podiatry you need a Klasse B device.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner enough instead of an autoclave?
No. The ultrasonic cleaner complements the autoclave for pre-cleaning and disinfection, but it does not replace the sterilisation of critical instruments. As soon as instruments come into contact with blood or injured skin, subsequent sterilisation in the Klasse B autoclave is required.
Is a UV or hot-air device enough for podiatry?
No. UV and hot-air devices are not sufficient for reprocessing critical instruments. Hot-air sterilisers have not been approved for critical instruments since 2021. A Klasse B steam steriliser is required for safe sterilisation.
Which size do I need for my podiatry practice?
The right size depends on the quantity and length of the instruments per cycle: the 3 L has two trays, the 12 L three trays for around 18 wrapped instruments. With few treatments per day, the 3 L is usually enough; on busy days the 12 L is worthwhile. The configurator gives you a precise recommendation.
What is the difference between the 3 L and the 12 L autoclave?
The 12 L offers four times the volume and an integrated waste water tank, so no external canister is needed; the quick programme takes a little longer. Otherwise the devices are technically identical. The 3 L is more compact and faster and fits on any worktop.
What is the difference between the Pro and Premium devices?
The autoclave and operation are essentially the same. Premium models additionally offer a fixed water connection, WLAN/LAN connection to the practice software as well as paperless batch release and documentation on the touchscreen (SteriTrace). With the Pro, documentation is done via an integrated printer and USB. For podiatry, a Pro device is usually sufficient.
Do I need a sealing device in podiatry?
For podiatry, self-sealing sterilisation pouches are usually sufficient – inexpensive and uncomplicated. A sealing device is not strictly necessary. If you wrap larger quantities or need validatable seal seams, we are happy to advise you on the right sealing device.
Is validation mandatory for a foot care or podiatry practice?
As soon as you reprocess instruments that come into contact with blood, validation is also mandatory in podiatry and foot care. In purely cosmetic foot care without critical instruments, it is often omitted; however, it can be carried out later at any time.
Is validation mandatory?
In Germany, validation is mandatory for everyone who reprocesses medical instruments used on humans, for example in podiatry, beauty, tattoo/piercing studios as well as in medical practices and clinics; the basis is, among other things, the MPBetreibV. Anyone who does not reprocess critical instruments that come into contact with blood is usually not obliged to do so.
What does validation of an autoclave mean?
Validation is a formal inspection that demonstrates that your autoclave and the entire reprocessing process meet the applicable standards and sterilise reliably. It is usually carried out on site every two years using your own instruments as the load.
How does validation work?
During validation, an authorised validator assesses the autoclave and reprocessing process on site: using measurement sensors, this includes a vacuum test, an empty-chamber profile and several sterilisation runs with your instruments. You then receive a validation report.
Does validation always have to be carried out on site?
Yes, validation must be carried out on site with your instruments as the load, because it tests the actual conditions at the place of use. Shipping the device to the factory is not possible for this. We can service a device that has been sent in, but we only validate on site.
Can I carry out the validation myself?
No. Validation must be carried out by an authorised validator with special measurement technology and is practically impossible to perform yourself. Steri24 handles the entire process on site; in principle it can also be carried out by another authorised provider.
Can validation be done later, and is the device usable beforehand?
Yes. The initial validation is a process validation and can also be carried out after commissioning; the autoclave is ready for use immediately after delivery. It can be commissioned at any later point in time.
How often must the autoclave be validated?
Validation is generally due every two years; with the smooth operation of a Klasse B autoclave this interval can be fully used. High cycle counts or special requirements may necessitate earlier revalidation.
When must the initial validation take place after purchase?
The initial validation should take place promptly after commissioning in a separate appointment on site. You can use the device immediately after delivery. We arrange the appointment individually with you.
Can I order the initial validation right away?
Yes, you can order the initial validation directly with the autoclave or commission it separately at any time afterwards. We arrange the appointment individually with you.
At what interval must the autoclave be serviced?
Maintenance is scheduled every 24 months, but earlier as soon as around 1,000 sterilisation cycles have been reached. This applies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland regardless of actual usage.
Is maintenance also required with low usage?
Yes. Maintenance is due every 24 months, regardless of the actual cycle count. Only with very high usage, namely when reaching about 1,000 cycles, is it due earlier.
What is a maintenance contract and what does it include?
A maintenance contract secures the scheduled servicing and can extend the warranty. We remind you in good time, arrange the appointment and take care of the work, spare parts and report. We are happy to tell you the exact scope and conditions.
Who handles maintenance and repair of the autoclave?
Maintenance and repairs are carried out by our own trained service technicians or authorised service partners – either on site at your premises or at the factory. Steri24 sells directly and handles the service itself, without the detour via intermediaries.

Is there a loan device during maintenance or in case of a defect?
Yes, we provide a limited number of loan devices, especially in the event of a repair, so that your work is not interrupted. The loan device is supplied with the necessary accessories.
Can I install and commission the autoclave myself?
Yes. You can set up and commission the autoclave yourself – all you need is a power socket and filling with distilled water. There are instructions and videos as well as a free introduction via video chat. On-site setup by a technician can optionally be booked.
Does the autoclave need a fixed water connection?
No, a fixed water connection is not necessary. All devices are stand-alone units with an integrated fresh and waste water tank and can be filled manually. A fixed water connection can optionally be ordered from 12 L and can also be retrofitted later.
Is a normal power socket enough, or is three-phase power required?
A normal household power socket is sufficient; three-phase power is not required. Apart from the power connection, the model without a fixed water connection needs no further connection.
Which water must I use for the autoclave?
Use distilled or demineralised water with the lowest possible conductivity. Commercially available distilled water from a drugstore, supermarket or DIY store is suitable. Tap water and technical battery/iron water are not suitable and can damage the device.
Does the autoclave have to be in a separate room?
A separate room is not strictly necessary; the autoclave can also be placed in the treatment room. If reprocessing takes place in the treatment room, this should only be done when no patients are in the room. A window and water connection are not required.
How much space does the 3 L autoclave need?
The 3 L is ultra-compact and fits on almost any worktop – ideal for small podiatry practices. Thanks to the integrated water tank you need no fixed water connection; simply set it up, switch on and get started. We are happy to give you the exact dimensions of your preferred model.
How long does a sterilisation cycle take?
The duration depends on the model, programme and load. With the 3 L the quick programme starts at around seven minutes; with a full load of wrapped instruments the 3 L takes about eleven to 22 minutes and the 12 L around 30 to 35 minutes. The smaller the device, the shorter the runtime.
Which instruments can I sterilise in podiatry?
Suitable are stainless steel instruments as well as heat-resistant, autoclavable plastics. Hollow bodies and critical instruments can also be safely reprocessed in the Klasse B process. Excluded are only instruments that the manufacturer explicitly labels as not autoclavable, as well as single-use products.
Do I have to wrap instruments or may I sterilise them unwrapped?
You can autoclave wrapped, unwrapped or in a mixed load. Critical instruments that come into contact with blood or penetrate the skin should be sterilised and stored wrapped; non-critical and semi-critical instruments may be sterilised unwrapped.
How do I load the autoclave correctly?
Ensure sufficient air and steam penetration: do not place instruments too closely together and ideally wrap them individually so they do not touch. Distribute the load evenly and avoid overloading.
Does the autoclave indicate whether the sterilisation was successful?
Yes. On success, a message such as „Programme finished“ appears, often with several beeps, and the door unlocks. In the event of a fault, an error code appears instead. In addition, you document each batch in an audit-proof way via USB and thermal printer.
How do I document in an RKI-compliant way in podiatry?
With our Pro devices you document each batch in an audit-proof way: print logs directly on the integrated thermal printer or save them to USB. This way every batch is traceable and you are prepared for inspections – entirely without complicated technology.
How do I save the sterilisation logs to USB?
The logs can be saved to a USB stick as text files; the USB port is located on the side or at the bottom of the device. Use a stick that is as empty as possible with FAT formatting. This way you keep all batches in an audit-proof manner.
When do I have to write the batch number on the pouch?
Always after sterilisation. At least the batch number must be written on the wrapped instruments, ideally with a sterilisation pen without toxic chemicals. Tracing labels are also affixed after sterilisation.
How do I change the bacterial filter?
Unscrew the old filter and fit the new one – you may and should do this yourself. The bacterial filter is changed about every 150 cycles. On touchscreen models you confirm the change on the display for seamless documentation.
What does the message „poor water quality“ mean?
Use suitable distilled or demineralised water with low conductivity, not technical water. Replace the water with fresh water. If you use a water treatment system, the cartridges and bacterial filters should be replaced at the intended interval.
Instruments are wet after sterilisation – what should I do?
Ensure an even load that is not too dense and avoid overloading so that the steam circulates well and drying takes effect. If the problem persists, report it via the service form with a description and photos, then a technician will help further.
The autoclave no longer switches on – what can I do?
First check the fuse and power cable, as this is often the cause. If the device smells burnt, switch it off immediately and unplug it. Report the fault with a description and photos via the service form, then a technician will contact you.
