Which autoclave suits me and how do I find the right model?
The key factors are sterilisation class, chamber size and features (Pro or Premium). For medical instruments, Class B is the standard; the quickest way to find out which size and line suits your daily workload is to spend about 2 minutes with our autoclave configurator or have a brief advisory conversation.
What is the difference between Class B, S and N autoclaves?
Class B offers full-value sterilisation with a fractionated vacuum process for wrapped and unwrapped, hollow and porous instruments. Class N may only sterilise unwrapped, solid instruments and is not permitted in human medicine; Class S lies in between but does not cover all loads. For medical practices you need a Class B device.
Why is Class B the standard for medical instruments?
Only Class B with a fractionated vacuum reliably removes the air from cavities and porous materials as well and allows the sterilisation of wrapped instruments. This means Class B covers the full spectrum of critical instruments and meets the requirements for reprocessing for use on humans.
What autoclave size do I need and how many instruments or trays fit inside?
The right size depends on the quantity and length of instruments per cycle: the 3L has 2 trays, the 12L has 3 trays (approx. 18 wrapped instruments), and the 18L and 23L have 5 trays each. The 23L holds up to about 20 unwrapped instruments per tray. It is best to use our configurator for a precise recommendation.
What is the difference between the Pro and Premium autoclaves?
The autoclave and its operation are fundamentally the same. The Premium models additionally offer a fixed water connection, WLAN/LAN connection to the practice software, as well as paperless batch release and documentation directly on the touchscreen (SteriTrace). With the Pro, documentation is done via an integrated printer/USB and manual water filling.
Do I really need the more expensive Premium model?
No, not necessarily. Pro is sufficient if you want to sterilise reliably and document via printer or USB. Premium is mainly worthwhile if you want a fixed water connection, a connection to the practice software and paperless batch release (SteriTrace) — typical where there are several practitioners. The configurator helps with an honest assessment.
What is the difference between the 3L and the 12L autoclave?
The 12L offers four times the volume and an integrated waste-water tank (no external canister needed); the quick programme takes a little longer. Otherwise the devices are technically identical. The 3L is more compact and faster, while the 12L only costs a small additional charge.
Which autoclave is suitable for foot care, beauty or nail studios?
For foot care, beauty and nail studios, the Class B Pro 3L (small, fast, compact) is usually the most popular choice; from about 8 treatments per day or with several staff members we recommend the 12L Pro, which offers four times the volume for a small additional charge. It is best to fill in our configurator, then we will find the right device.
Which autoclave is suitable for a dental practice?
For dental practices we usually recommend the 18L or 23L Class B, depending on the number of practitioners and the quantity of instruments; with several practitioners, a device with documentation and practice-software connection (Premium). For around 15 individually wrapped instruments the 12L is often sufficient. It is best to use the configurator or a brief advisory conversation.
Which autoclave is suitable for a gynaecological practice?
For gynaecological practices we usually recommend the 23L autoclave (Pro or Premium), as instruments such as specula are relatively large and need a lot of space; for lower demand an 18L is also sufficient. It is best to fill in our configurator so that we can recommend the right device specifically.
Which autoclave is suitable for a podiatry practice?
For podiatry practices the 3L Class B Pro (compact, fast) is usually the most popular; for larger practices with many treatments, the 12L is more suitable. We recommend the matching value package with the necessary accessories.
Which autoclave is suitable for a tattoo or piercing studio?
Tattoo and piercing studios need a Class B autoclave. The most popular are the 3L or 12L Pro; for sole operation the 3L is often sufficient, while for higher throughput we recommend the 12L. Self-sealing pouches and an accessory value package go well with it.
Which autoclave is suitable for a veterinary practice or veterinary medicine?
Our Class B autoclaves are suitable for veterinary medicine; most veterinary practices order the 12L or 23L Pro, while for very low demand the 3L may suffice. As a rule, no validation is required for veterinary practices.
Which autoclave is suitable for a general, internal medicine or dermatology practice?
Our Class B autoclaves are suitable for doctors', general, internal medicine and dermatology practices; depending on the quantity and size of instruments, the 12L or 23L is usually the right choice, or the 3L for low throughput. The exact choice depends on the largest instrument and the quantity per cycle.
Which autoclave is suitable for my specialty or my practice?
Our Class B autoclaves are suitable for all medical specialties; the right size depends on the quantity and length of the instruments. It is best to fill in our configurator or get brief advice by phone, then we will recommend the right device specifically.
How many instruments can I reprocess per day with the different sizes?
The capacity depends on size, packaging and cycle time. As a rule of thumb: small devices for a few treatments per day, larger devices for higher throughput or several practitioners. We deliberately size to your real daily workload — not too tight and not too expensive; the configurator helps with this.
Is an ultrasonic cleaner, UV or hot-air device enough, or do I need an autoclave?
As soon as instruments come into contact with blood or mucous membranes (critical instruments), a Class B autoclave is required; ultrasonic, UV and hot-air devices are not sufficient for this. The ultrasonic cleaner complements the autoclave for pre-cleaning but does not replace it. Hot-air sterilisers are no longer approved for critical instruments.
Why does only the steam steriliser (autoclave) meet the standard for critical instruments?
Saturated steam transfers heat far more effectively and evenly than dry hot air and thus reliably achieves the necessary kill rate — even in cavities and under packaging. Hot-air sterilisers are no longer approved for critical instruments; that is why the Class B steam steriliser is the standard here.
What is ultrasonic cleaning and why is it important before sterilisation?
In the ultrasonic cleaner, fine vibrations create microscopic bubbles that dislodge dirt even from grooves, joints and cavities. This thorough pre-cleaning is a prerequisite for safe sterilisation, as residues can impair sterilisation success. The ultrasonic cleaner complements the autoclave but does not replace it.
What distinguishes an autoclave from a washer-disinfector (cleaning and disinfection device)?
A washer-disinfector (cleaning and disinfection device) handles cleaning and thermal disinfection automatically and thus largely replaces manual pre-cleaning. The autoclave then carries out the actual steam sterilisation. Both steps complement each other; at higher volumes the combination makes sense.
Are your autoclaves medical devices and approved in Germany?
Yes, our Class B autoclaves are approved medical devices (Class IIb) intended for the reprocessing of medical instruments. They conform to EN 13060; CE approval is granted via a notified body (TÜV SÜD/Rheinland).
What does the EN 13060 standard mean for Class B autoclaves?
EN 13060 is the European standard for small sterilisers and sets out the requirements for Class B steam sterilisers, including the test cycles for wrapped, hollow and porous loads. Our Class B autoclaves conform to this standard.
Does my autoclave have to be validated?
Validation is required as soon as you reprocess critical instruments that come into contact with blood for use on humans (basis includes the MPBetreibV). If no critical instruments are reprocessed, there is generally no obligation to validate. If in doubt, we are happy to clarify this in an advisory conversation.
What is the difference between validation and maintenance?
Maintenance is the technical servicing of the device with replacement of wear parts (as a rule every 2 years). Validation is the formal verification that the entire sterilisation process meets the standards and works reliably. Both are separate, regularly recurring services.
Can I buy an autoclave without validation?
Yes. You can also order the autoclave without validation and put it into operation according to the manual. Whether validation is mandatory depends on your area of use (reprocessing of critical instruments for use on humans). It can be added at any time later.
Can I order the initial validation together with the autoclave?
Yes, you can order the initial validation directly with the autoclave or commission it separately at any time afterwards. Since validation is carried out on site, it is not included in the device shipment; we arrange the appointment individually with you.
Is the device ready to use immediately after delivery or only after validation?
You can use the device immediately after delivery according to the manual. The initial validation is a process validation and can also be carried out after commissioning in a separate on-site appointment.
As a veterinarian, do I need validation?
As a rule, no validation is required for veterinary practices, since different rules apply here than for reprocessing for use on humans. Our Class B autoclaves are suitable; the size depends on your throughput.
Do I need validation in pure foot care without blood contact?
As soon as you reprocess instruments that come into contact with blood, validation is also mandatory in podiatry/foot care. In pure foot care without critical instruments it is often omitted; however, it can be carried out at any time afterwards.
Which water must be used for the autoclave?
Use distilled or demineralised/fully desalinated water (conductivity ideally below 15-20 µS/cm). Commercially available distilled water from a drugstore, supermarket or hardware store is suitable; technical battery/ironing water is not. Tap water is not suitable and can damage the device.
Is water treatment such as the AQUAdem worthwhile for the autoclave?
A water treatment system (e.g. AQUAdem) continuously supplies treated water and saves you the constant refilling with canisters — especially useful for frequent use or a fixed water connection. For low use, commercially available distilled water is often sufficient. The configurator takes the right accessories into account.
Are there autoclaves with and without a fixed water connection?
Yes. All devices have a fresh-water and waste-water tank and can be operated with manual filling without a fixed water connection (the 3L has no fixed water connection). From the 12L onwards, a fixed water connection with drain can optionally be added, which makes sense for frequent use.
How long does a sterilisation cycle take?
The cycle time depends on the programme, load and drying; small devices with a quick programme are particularly fast, while larger loads take correspondingly longer. For your specific needs, we are happy to state the typical programme run times during the consultation.
Do I have to wrap instruments before sterilising them?
For storage as sterile goods, instruments are wrapped in a sterile barrier system (e.g. clear-view pouches); only Class B devices can reliably reprocess wrapped sterile goods. Instruments sterilised unwrapped are intended for immediate use. We offer suitable packaging pouches and sealing devices.
What is a sealing device for and do I need one in addition?
With a sealing device you seal clear-view pouches tightly so that the sterile goods can be stored sterile after reprocessing. If you keep wrapped sterile goods on hand, a sealing device makes sense — our CertoSeal continuous sealing devices with a cutting function simplify this considerably.
What is included in a set or value package and what do I need in addition?
Our sets bundle the autoclave and matching accessories at a reduced price and generally contain everything important for instrument reprocessing (e.g. ultrasonic cleaner, packaging pouches, helix test). In addition, depending on the risk class, you need a non-sterile and a sterile area and possibly a washer-disinfector; a complete package is possible via the configurator.
I'm replacing an ageing device — can I find a suitable replacement?
Yes. Our Steri24 Class B autoclaves to EN 13060 are a full-value, usually significantly cheaper replacement for established devices. As a replacement for a 17/18L device, the 18L Pro fits; for 22/23L devices, the 23L. We are happy to find the right replacement together.
What distinguishes Steri24 from established, expensive providers?
You get the same Class B performance to EN 13060 at significantly fairer prices, combined with a dense on-site service network across DACH, a multi-year warranty and personal advice. We rely on honest recommendations rather than a high-price image — you pay for performance and service, not for the name.
Is a used autoclave worthwhile or is a low-priced new device better?
With used devices, you bear risks regarding condition, remaining service life, warranty and validatability. Since our new Class B devices are fairly priced and come with a warranty and service, a low-priced new purchase is usually the safer choice. Talk to us about current offers.
Can I finance an autoclave in instalments or by leasing?
Yes, depending on the model and target group, instalment payment (e.g. via common payment services) or leasing is possible. You can see which options are available to you during the ordering process or clarify them briefly with our advisory team.
How long does a Steri24 autoclave last?
With regular maintenance, our autoclaves last around 20-25 years. The 3L Pro lasts about 10-15 years due to its smaller vacuum pump. During maintenance, all critical wear parts are replaced on schedule, which ensures the long service life.
How reliably do the devices run and how quickly is help available in case of a fault?
Our autoclaves are very reliable and safeguarded by a dense service network across DACH. In the event of a fault, a replacement device is usually available at short notice and a technician promptly. Warranty and maintenance services keep the device permanently safe.
Who handles maintenance and repair after the purchase?
Maintenance, validation and repair are handled by our own technicians and service partners on site in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We remind you of due appointments in good time and take care of execution, spare parts and reporting.
At what interval must an autoclave be maintained?
Maintenance is generally due every 2 years or after a set number of cycles; larger devices (e.g. 45L) or high utilisation may require shorter intervals. We contact you in good time and arrange the appointment with you.
Do Class B autoclaves have a bacterial filter that has to be replaced?
Yes, Class B autoclaves have a bacterial filter that has to be replaced regularly depending on use or when the device displays the corresponding message. After the change, you reset the message with the enclosed code.
Are your autoclaves suitable for laboratories or the sterilisation of liquids?
Our Class B autoclaves are intended for medical instruments and are not suitable for the sterilisation of liquids or for S2 laboratories. For laboratory applications, liquids or freely programmable cycles, there are specialised laboratory autoclaves.
Do you offer very large autoclaves with several hundred litres?
Our largest device is the Class B Pro 45L. We do not offer larger volumes; for higher demand, many customers set up several 23L devices. We are happy to advise you on your capacity planning.
What can I do if I simply can't decide?

How does switching from the old device work in practice?
